Butterfly Valley Rhodes, also known as Petaloudes, lies on the western side of the island. It lies about 26 kilometers from Rhodes Town and 10 kilometers from the airport. The valley offers a peaceful retreat in a lush, shaded setting. 

This area is famous for its natural beauty. A dense forest surrounds the valley. A stream runs through it, creating small lakes and waterfalls. Also, wooden bridges and stone paths guide visitors along the route. The air feels cool and fresh, even in summer. 

From late June to early September, the valley fills with thousands of butterflies. These belong to the Panaxia quadripunctaria species. They gather here during their reproduction season. The butterflies stay quiet during the day, resting on rocks and tree trunks. Their unique patterns blend with the surroundings. 

The valley’s trees also make the area special. The Oriental Sweetgum tree (Liquidambar orientalis) grows in abundance here. This tree releases a sweet scent that attracts the butterflies. In fact, the scent helps guide them during migration. Visitors can explore the valley through a series of shaded trails. The valley is also home to a unique blue crab species.

Wooden benches and viewing spots offer places to rest and enjoy the scenery. Signs provide useful information about the butterfly species and the ecosystem. At the entrance, the Museum of Natural History introduces the flora and fauna of the region. The museum also includes displays about the butterfly’s life cycle. 

To reach Butterfly Valley, visitors can take a car, taxi, or bus from Rhodes Town. Parking is available near the entrance. Entry fees apply, with discounts for children, students, and seniors.  However, visitors must stay quiet to avoid disturbing the butterflies. Flash photography is not allowed. Touching the butterflies or shaking the trees may harm them.
