Porto Lagos, also known as Nestos National Park, is a small coastal village in northern Greece. It lies in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, between the cities of Xanthi and Komotini. The village sits where Lake Vistonida meets the Aegean Sea.

First, the area impresses with its unique landscape. Lake Vistonida, coastal wetlands, and dense forests surround the village. These natural features create one of the richest ecosystems in Greece. In fact, the region forms part of the Natura 2000 protected network. Birdwatchers flock to the area throughout the year. Flamingos, herons, pelicans, and even white-tailed eagles appear regularly. Especially during spring and autumn, migratory birds fill the sky and marshes.

Next, many visitors come for the village’s spiritual sites. The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos stands on a small islet in the lagoon. Wooden bridges connect the monastery to the mainland. Monks from the famous Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos maintain it. Nearby, a second chapel honors Panagia Pantanassa, a title of the Virgin Mary. Pilgrims and tourists alike walk across the bridges to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. 

In addition, the village offers simple but enjoyable activities. Walking paths run along the lake and through nearby pine forests. Many people also enjoy cycling, fishing, or birdwatching in the area. 

For food, visitors often stop at local tavernas. Fresh fish, seafood, and regional specialties like grilled octopus appear on most menus. Many tavernas sit by the water and serve meals with a view. Also, some shops in the area also sell local honey, herbs, and handmade goods.

Travelers can reach Porto Lagos easily by car. It lies about 25 kilometers south of Xanthi and 30 kilometers west of Komotini. The Egnatia Odos highway provides direct access. Kavala Airport, located about an hour away, serves as the nearest airport.
