Spianada Square stands in the heart of Corfu Town. It holds the title of the largest square in Greece and the Balkans. The square lies between the Old Fortress of Corfu and the Liston arcades, creating a wide and open esplanade.

The square divides into two sections: Upper (Pano) and Lower (Kato) Spianada. The Upper Spianada features green lawns, walking paths, and tall trees. A music pavilion, known as the “Palko,” hosts concerts and public celebrations. Throughout the year, local philharmonic bands perform here during festivals, especially at Easter.

In contrast, the Lower Spianada offers open space and unique traditions. A wide grassy field supports cricket matches, a legacy from British rule. This rare sport in Greece continues to draw both players and curious onlookers. Furthermore, visitors can admire landmarks such as the Union of the Ionian Islands monument, a Venetian fountain, and a statue of Count von der Schulenburg.

To the west, the elegant Liston arcade lines the square. Inspired by Paris’ Rue de Rivoli, the French built it during their rule in the early 19th century. Today, its arched colonnades host stylish cafés and restaurants.

Several key attractions surround the square. The Old Fortress offers stunning views and military history. Just a few steps away, the Palace of St. Michael and St. George houses the Museum of Asian Art. Behind the Liston, narrow alleys lead into Corfu’s old town, full of shops, churches, and small museums.
