Richtis Gorge is a stunning hiking trail in Lassithi Crete. It lies between Sitia and Agios Nikolaos, close to the small village of Exo Mouliana. The gorge stretches for about 3 kilometers, starting from the mountains and ending at a quiet beach. It offers a mix of lush greenery, flowing water, and peaceful scenery.

The trail starts near the old stone bridge of Lachanas, just outside the village. There is a small parking area and clear signs pointing to the gorge. From the very beginning, the path feels like an escape into a different world. Tall trees, wild herbs, and the sound of running water surround the area. The path is shaded and cool, even during hot summer days. It follows a small river that flows all year round. So, it’s best to wear sturdy shoes that can get wet.

One of the highlights of the hike is the Richtis Waterfall. It stands about 20 meters tall and forms a small natural pool at its base. It’s a great spot to rest, cool off, or take photos. In the summer, many hikers take a quick dip here. The water is cold but very refreshing. From the waterfall, the path continues down the trail until Richtis Beach. It’s a small, pebbly beach with crystal-clear water and almost no crowds. Some people hike back the same way, while others take a taxi or arrange a pickup from the beach.

The hike through Richtis Gorge takes about 2.5 to 4 hours round trip, depending on your pace and how long you stop. Spring and early autumn are the best times to visit, as the weather is pleasant and the water flow is stronger. In summer, it’s still enjoyable thanks to the shade and water.
