Pithara Waterfalls, located near the village of Apikia on Andros Island, are among the island’s most captivating natural attractions. Surrounded by lush vegetation, the waterfalls create a peaceful and refreshing retreat. Water flows from the mountain springs of Petalo, forming a steady stream that cuts through the greenery.

Despite being part of the Cyclades, Andros boasts a surprisingly green landscape. Pithara Waterfalls are a perfect example of this contrast. While other islands in the region appear dry and rocky, Andros offers dense foliage, clear waters, and a cooler microclimate. The area around the falls is filled with plane trees, ferns, wildflowers, and moss-covered stones. 

Reaching the waterfalls is easy. Start at Apikia village, located about 7 kilometers from Chora, the island’s capital. From the center of Apikia, a short path leads to the falls. The walk takes around 10 minutes and is suitable for most visitors. The trail is well-marked and shaded by trees, which helps keep it cool even during the summer. 

Pithara is a popular stop for hikers and nature lovers. The sounds of flowing water and birdsong make it a great place to relax. Visitors often pause for photos, picnics, or a break from the sun. Swimming is not advised due to the shallow and cold waters, but the area still offers a refreshing atmosphere. During the spring and early summer, the water flow is at its strongest, and the surrounding plants are in full bloom.
