Mili Gorge Crete stretches just a few kilometers south of Rethymno. It begins near the village of Chromonastiri and runs for about two kilometers. Although the gorge is not long, it offers rich natural beauty and historical charm. As a result, it attracts hikers, photographers, and families alike. 

The entrance is easy to find. Visitors can drive or take a taxi from Rethymno. Some even choose to walk from the town, as the road to the gorge is direct and scenic. Upon arrival, a small parking area and signs mark the start of the trail. From the beginning, the gorge offers a peaceful atmosphere.  In addition, small springs and streams run alongside the path. Because of this, the air stays cool, even in summer. 

As hikers move deeper into the gorge, they discover several stone ruins. Old watermills stand beside the trail. These buildings once powered the local economy. Hence, the name “Mili,” which means “mills” in Greek. Many of the mills still show their original features. Though nature now covers them, they still tell a story of the past. 

Moreover, the trail continues with steady footing and beautiful surroundings. Wooden bridges help visitors cross the stream. Benches along the way offer places to rest. Therefore, the walk suits all ages and fitness levels. Families with children often enjoy the easy terrain and shaded areas. 

Eventually, the path leads to the lower exit near the village of Xiro Chorio. From there, visitors can return the same way or follow a road back to the starting point. Nearby tavernas serve fresh local food, perfect after a relaxing hike.
