Lake Kournas Crete is the only freshwater lake on the island. It is located in the northwest of the Chania region, near the village of Kournas. The lake sits between the Lefka Ori mountain range and the Cretan Sea.

The lake is surrounded by a rich landscape. The area is covered in lush vegetation, with reeds and trees lining the shore. The clear water of the lake is calm and inviting. Visitors can swim, kayak, or pedal boat on the lake.

Lake Kournas has an interesting history. It was once much larger but has gradually shrunk over the years. Despite this, the lake remains an important part of the local ecosystem. It is home to various species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. If they’re lucky, visitors may spot some of the native creatures, like turtles and waterfowl.

The small village of Kournas is also close by. Here, visitors can find traditional Cretan tavernas where they can enjoy local food, such as fresh seafood and lamb dishes.

The best time to visit Lake Kournas Crete is during the spring or fall. The weather is mild, and the landscape is at its most beautiful. In the summer, the area can get hot, but the lake’s cool waters provide a refreshing escape.

Parking is available near the lake, and there are various services, including cafes and boat rentals. The lake is easily accessible by car from either Chania or Rethymno, making it an ideal day trip.
