Plakias Beach lies on the southern coast of Crete. It sits about 35 kilometers south of Rethymno. This beach combines natural charm with helpful amenities. It stretches over 1.3 kilometers and offers golden sandy shores. The turquoise water stays clear and inviting. 

The beach includes everything visitors need. You will find sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers. Families with children love the shallow waters near the shore. Lifeguards often patrol the area, adding a sense of safety. If you want more peace, head to the eastern side. This part, called Paligremnos, feels more secluded.

Tall cliffs rise above this end of the beach. Locals call them Gonates. They tell stories about the ancient hero Digenis jumping off these rocks. Between September and January, the moonlight reflects off the cliffs. This light attracts squid to the shore. Visitors often stay up late just to watch.

The village of Plakias itself has a calm atmosphere. It used to be a fishing village. Now it welcomes tourists but keeps a laid-back vibe. You can find family-run hotels and modern apartments. Many tavernas serve fresh seafood and local dishes. Try the grilled octopus or local cheese pies. You won’t regret it.

In the evening, the village gets livelier but never too loud. A few small bars and cafes line the shore. You can enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. 

Getting to Plakias Beach is simple. You can drive from Rethymno along a scenic route. Buses also run regularly. Once you arrive, you’ll find shops, markets, and ATMs. Even without a bank, most places take cards.
