Olimpi’s Cave, also known as Sykia Cave, lies near the village of Olimpi in southern Chios. Located just 5 kilometers from the village and 35 kilometers from Chios Town, the cave offers easy access by car. First, a scenic drive leads to the entrance. Then, a short walk brings visitors to this natural wonder.
The cave sits at 110 meters above sea level and extends 55 meters deep. The Hellenic Speleological Society discovered it in 1985. Later, in 2003, the site opened to the public. Since then, travelers from around the world have explored its fascinating interior.
Inside the cave, visitors first notice the incredible formations. Stalactites and stalagmites grow in various directions. Some tilt at unusual angles because of strong airflows from the ceiling’s natural openings. Furthermore, the minerals in the rock add vibrant colors. Gray and white hues come from calcium carbonate, while red and yellow tones result from clay-rich soil.
The main chamber spans roughly 30 by 30 meters. Beyond it, smaller halls branch out and reveal more unique features. In addition, a natural skylight allows sunlight to stream into the cave, enhancing its visual appeal. The cave maintains a steady temperature of 18°C and a humidity level of 95%, which helps the formations grow over time.
Moreover, the cave offers guided tours from May to September. These tours run every 30 minutes between 11:00 and 18:00, except on Mondays. Each tour provides detailed explanations about the cave’s history and geology. A double-door system at the entrance protects the microclimate and keeps the environment stable.
After the tour, visitors can stop by the small café nearby. The café serves drinks and snacks, offering a chance to relax. Additionally, a gift shop sells souvenirs and local products, such as Chios mastic items. Benches outside allow guests to rest while enjoying views of the surrounding hills.
In conclusion, Olimpi’s Cave combines natural beauty with cultural interest. Visitors enjoy both the underground spectacle and the peaceful landscape above.
