Mavra Volia is a striking beach located on the southwestern coast of Chios and the most famous on the island. Known for its unique and dramatic appearance, the beach stands out due to its black pebbles, which are the result of volcanic activity in the area. The name “Mavra Volia” translates to “Black Pebbles” in Greek, and the dark stones create a stark contrast with the vibrant blue waters, giving the beach an otherworldly feel.

There are no major facilities at Mavra Volia, which adds to its natural appeal. The beach is relatively quiet, even during the high season, which makes it perfect for those seeking a more peaceful and intimate experience. Visitors should bring their own essentials, such as water, snacks, and sunscreen, as there are no shops or restaurants directly on the beach.

Despite its simplicity, Mavra Volia offers excellent opportunities for relaxation. The shallow waters along the shore are perfect for wading, and the beach’s small size ensures that it’s never overcrowded. The beach is also close to the popular village of Pyrgi, which is famous for its medieval houses adorned with intricate geometric patterns called “Xysta.

One of the aspects of Mavra Volia that many don’t know about, is that it is connected via a short path to the tiny neighboring beach of Foki, where visitors can enjoy a more secluded environment.

Even though the beach has ample space, the parking area can easily become packed due to its small size during high season. For this reason, it’s recommended to visit  either early in the morning or in the afternoon.
