Mavra Volia Chios sits on the southwestern coast of the island, about 30 km south of Chios Town. It ranks as the Chios’ most famous beach. Volcanic activity in the area created its signature black pebbles. These dark stones sharply contrast with the clear, blue water.

The name “Mavra Volia” means “Black Pebbles” in Greek. True to its name, the entire shore is covered in smooth, jet-black stones. The visual effect is striking, especially on sunny days when the light reflects off the surface. However, bringing water shoes might prove essential as the pebbled surface is rough to walk on barefoot.

Although the beach attracts many, it stays peaceful most of the time. Even in high season, the beach rarely feels overcrowded. There are no shops, restaurants, or organized facilities on the shore. The nearby village of Pyrgi lies just a short drive away. Pyrgi is known for its medieval houses and unique black-and-white wall designs, called Xysta. It makes a perfect stop before or after a beach visit.

For those looking for more seclusion, a narrow footpath connects Mavra Volia Beach to a smaller neighboring beach called Foki. Foki offers even more privacy and the same deep-blue waters. The walk takes only a few minutes and leads through a scenic, rocky path.

Parking near Mavra Volia Chios is limited. Although the beach has plenty of space, the small parking lot fills up quickly during peak hours. To avoid this, visitors should plan to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
