Filerimos Monastery sits on Filerimos Hill near Ialysos, about 14 kilometers from Rhodes Town. The monastery offers a peaceful atmosphere and a blend of religion and nature.
The monastery dates back to the 13th century. A monk from Jerusalem brought a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary to the hill. Over time, the Knights of St. John built a Gothic-style monastery in the 15th century. The current structure was restored during the Italian rule in the 20th century, maintaining much of its historical charm.
Visitors can explore the monastery’s courtyard. Here, a bell tower stands beside a small chapel. The monastery is surrounded by tall trees, adding to the serenity of the location. Also, just outside the monastery, the “Way of the Cross” path stretches up the hill. This tree-lined route leads to a massive 18-meter-high cross.
The site is rich in ancient history. The Acropolis of Ialyssos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes, lies nearby. Moreover, visitors can see remains of the Temple of Athena Polias and a cross-shaped baptistery. There is also an underground church, St. George, dating from the 14th century.
Filerimos Monastery is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00. It stays open later on Tuesdays and Fridays until 20:00. There is a small entrance fee for adults. EU seniors and students receive a discount. Children under 18 can visit for free.
Visitors can easily reach the monastery by car, taxi, or public transport from Rhodes Town. Free parking is available near the entrance. Facilities on-site include restrooms and a small gift shop. The shop offers local crafts and religious items.
In short, Filerimos Monastery combines religious history with stunning views and ancient ruins. Its quiet location makes it a perfect place to visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking a tranquil spot on Rhodes.
