Cretaquarium Heraklion sits near Gournes, about 15 kilometers east of Heraklion in Crete. It opened in 2005 and quickly became one of Europe’s top aquariums. It focuses on marine life from the Mediterranean Sea. Families, couples, and solo travelers all enjoy visiting.

The aquarium holds over 2,500 marine animals. These belong to more than 250 species. Inside, you’ll find 61 tanks filled with 1.8 million liters of seawater. Each area recreates a different underwater environment. You can see stingrays, groupers, jellyfish, and even sharks.

The layout guides you through five themed sections. One area mimics deep sea caves. Another shows open sea life like turtles and large fish. Coastal sections display colorful anemones and lobsters. You can also find tropical creatures such as clownfish. Lastly, one zone allows you to get close to the animals and see how the aquarium operates.

Cretaquarium Heraklion does more than show fish. It also supports marine research and education. Scientists from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research work here. They study marine ecosystems and protect local species.

Plan to spend at least 90 minutes here. The space is modern, clean, and easy to walk through. Everything has signs in both Greek and English. Friendly staff can help you if you have questions. The aquarium also offers guided audio tours for a deeper experience.

The aquarium is open daily. In summer, it stays open from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM. In winter, it closes earlier at 4:00 PM. There is an entry fee, but kids under 5 get in free.

You can also enjoy a meal or coffee at the on-site café. It has a sea view and serves light meals. Next to it, you’ll find a gift shop with ocean-themed souvenirs and toys. There’s free parking, and buses run from Heraklion.
