Aliki Lake Lemnos stretches across the northeastern part of island, about 32 kilometers east of Myrina. It covers over 6,000 acres and lies just behind a two-kilometer strip of sand dunes that separate it from the sea. As a result, the lake forms a unique coastal wetland with both natural beauty and ecological value.

During winter and spring, seawater flows into the lake. Shallow waters attract many bird species, turning the area into a paradise for birdwatchers. As summer approaches, specifically from late June to late September, the water gradually evaporates under the heat. Eventually, a thick crust of salt covers the ground. This white surface creates a striking contrast against the blue sky. Locals often collect salt during these dry months, although large-scale harvesting no longer takes place.

Moreover, Aliki Lake supports rich biodiversity. It belongs to the Natura 2000 network, which protects important natural habitats across Europe. The lake serves as a key stop for migratory birds moving between Europe and Africa. Throughout the year, visitors can spot over 135 bird species. Flamingos, herons, and avocets often feed and rest here. In spring, the lake hosts some of the largest flamingo gatherings in Greece. Additionally, the surrounding dunes support rare plants such as sea daffodils and sea holly.

Getting to the lake is easy. A short dirt road leads from the main highway to the edge of the salt flat. Visitors can also park on the main road and walk from there. For a deeper experience, many choose to walk the full 800-meter stretch along the edge of the lake. Since the salt reflects sunlight strongly, sunglasses are highly recommended. Wearing a hat and bringing water also helps, especially during summer.

For those interested in ecology, the nearby Environmental Information Centre of Calliope offers helpful insights. The center explains the lake’s importance, the wildlife it supports, and the seasonal changes that shape its ecosystem.

In conclusion, Aliki Lake Lemnos combines natural beauty, wildlife, and geological wonder in one destination. Its changing appearance through the seasons makes every visit different.
