Nea Kameni is a volcanic island located in the middle of Santorini’s caldera. It formed from a series of eruptions over the last 2,000 years. Today, it remains an active but closely monitored volcano. Its black lava rocks and barren slopes create a dramatic contrast with the surrounding blue waters.

Nea Kameni attracts thousands of visitors each year who want to walk on volcanic land and witness its beauty up close. Reaching the island is simple. Many boat tours depart daily from the old port of Fira. These tours often include a visit to Palea Kameni and the nearby hot springs.

The main activity on the island is hiking to the volcano’s crater. The path is well-marked and easy to follow, but it’s steep in some areas. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the top. Along the way, hikers see steaming vents, solidified lava flows, and layers of ash. These features show the island’s turbulent volcanic past. The highest point offers panoramic views of the Santorini caldera, the surrounding islands, and the Aegean Sea.

Visitors should prepare for the heat and the rough terrain. The sun can be intense, especially in summer. There are no shops or shade on the island, so preparation is key. Also, the volcanic rock can get very hot and slippery, so caution helps prevent accidents. Tour guides often explain the island’s geology and history during the visit.

Nea Kameni last erupted in 1950. Since then, scientists have closely observed the island for signs of activity. Though quiet now, it remains one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the world. The hike is moderate and suitable for most people, including families with older children. However, it’s not ideal for those with mobility issues.

Entrance to the island includes a small entry fee, not included in most tour prices. Boat offer affordable prices, depending on the duration and stops.
