Merichas Kythnos serves as the main port and gateway to the island. Located on the Kythnos’ sheltered western coast, it sits approximately 8 kilometers from Chora, the island’s capital. Ferries from Piraeus and nearby Cycladic islands arrive here regularly. As a result, most visitors begin their Kythnos journey in Merichas. 

Despite its role as a transportation hub, Merichas maintains a calm, charming character. Traditional whitewashed houses climb the surrounding hills, while fishing boats and yachts line the waterfront. Restaurants, cafés, and shops stay open late, especially during the summer season.

Martinakia Beach lies directly beside the port. The beach combines coarse sand and small pebbles with shallow, calm waters.  While the beach does not compare to Kythnos’ more remote options in terms of natural beauty, it offers convenience and a quick dip just steps from town. 

Visitors can easily find essential services in Merichas. Several mini-markets, bakeries, and grocery shops supply daily necessities. Travelers also rely on the local pharmacy, ATMs, and car or scooter rental services. In addition, the marina supports small boats and private yachts, allowing sea travelers to dock comfortably. 

Taxis and buses connect Merichas to Chora, Loutra, Kanala, and other villages. Those who rent a car or scooter can reach nearby beaches like Episkopi and Martinakia within minutes. Both offer clearer waters and a more relaxed setting. 

Travelers typically visit Merichas Kythnos between May and early October. During this period, the weather stays warm and the sea remains ideal for swimming. July and August bring more visitors, but the town rarely feels overcrowded. Early summer and late September offer the most peaceful conditions.
