Koutalas Beach in Chania lies on the northern coast of Crete, near Cape Drapanos. It sits about 25 kilometers east of Chania Town and just north of Kokkino Chorio village. Although the beach feels remote, it remains accessible by road. The shoreline stretches into a narrow bay, framed by steep rocky cliffs. Because of the rocky seabed, water shoes are strongly recommended.

The sea remains crystal clear, offering great visibility for swimmers. Moreover, the calm water creates ideal conditions for snorkeling and diving. Nearby underwater caves, including the famous Elephant Cave, attract divers from all skill levels.

Unlike more crowded beaches, Koutalas stays quiet even during summer. Most visitors include nature lovers, hikers, and scuba divers. Due to the beach’s location, the sun shines for most of the day, so shade becomes essential. A few rock overhangs offer limited cover, but travelers should bring umbrellas or tents for better comfort.

The route to Koutalas Beach begins from Kokkino Chorio. A paved road leads toward Cape Drapanos before turning into a rough dirt track. Drivers reach a small parking area near the cliff’s edge. From there, a steep footpath with rocky steps descends to the beach. Despite the short hike, the scenery rewards the effort.

Facilities do not exist on the beach. No cafés, showers, or sunbeds are available. Therefore, visitors must come prepared. Bringing water, snacks, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit is essential. Furthermore, all waste should be taken back to preserve the natural surroundings. Nature here remains clean and unspoiled, and it deserves respect.

After a day at the beach, travelers often visit nearby villages. Kokkino Chorio provides small shops, cafés, and local tavernas. For more options, Almyrida lies about five kilometers away and features sandy beaches, restaurants, and family-friendly services.

In conclusion, Koutalas Beach combines raw natural beauty with quiet seclusion. Although the lack of services demands preparation, the stunning scenery, clear waters, and unique caves create a rewarding experience.
