Drogarati Cave Kefalonia is one of the most famous natural attractions of the island. It lies close to the town of Sami, about 5 kilometers from Melissani Cave.
The cave is around 150 million years old. It was discovered about 300 years ago when an earthquake revealed its entrance. Since then, Drogarati Cave has become a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. The cave is about 60 meters deep and 95 meters long.
The main chamber is known as the “Concert Hall.” It has excellent natural acoustics. Sometimes, concerts and musical events take place here because the sound quality is so good. The chamber is also huge, with a high ceiling and space for many visitors to walk around comfortably.
There is a parking area near the entrance of Drogarati Cave. From there, visitors walk down a short path to the ticket booth. After buying a ticket, you descend a staircase into the cave. The steps are safe but can be slippery, so it is a good idea to wear sturdy shoes.
Inside the cave, the temperature stays cool, around 18°C, even in the summer. Visitors often bring a light jacket. The paths inside are clearly marked and have handrails for safety. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to explore the entire cave.
The cave does not have any food or drink shops inside. However, there are cafes and souvenir shops near the entrance. Many visitors combine a trip to Drogarati Cave with a visit to nearby Melissani Lake, making it a great half-day excursion.
The best time to visit Drogarati Cave Kefalonia is during the morning or late afternoon. These times are less crowded and offer a more peaceful experience. Photography is allowed, but flash is not recommended as it can harm the cave formations.
