The Castle of Agios Georgios, also known as Saint George Castle, stands on a hill near the village of Peratata, in the central part of Kefalonia. The castle offers stunning views of the island, including the capital, Argostoli, and the surrounding countryside. It is one of the most important historical sites on the island and a must-visit for those interested in Kefalonia’s history and architecture.

The castle was originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century, although it stands on the site of earlier fortifications. The Venetians constructed it to protect the island from pirate invasions. Over the years, it has undergone several modifications, but much of the original structure remains. 

Visitors to the Castle of Agios Georgios can explore the ruins and enjoy panoramic views from the ramparts. The views stretch across the Ionian Sea and the fertile plains below. The castle’s location on a hill gives visitors a glimpse of Kefalonia’s natural beauty. It’s also a great spot for photography, especially at sunset when the landscape becomes bathed in warm golden light.

Inside the castle, you can find the ruins of a chapel dedicated to Saint George. The chapel once served as the center of religious life in the castle. Although much of it has been damaged over time, some parts of the chapel remain intact.

The Castle of Agios Georgios is easily accessible by car from Argostoli, which is about 10 kilometers away. The walk to the top is relatively short but involves some steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The castle is open from 8:30 AM until 3:30 PM and there is a small entry fee. However, there is no tour guide or parking area so visitors should keep that in mind when visiting.
