Agios Efstratios Island, also known as Ai Stratis, is a peaceful and remote destination in the northern Aegean Sea, located southeast of Lemnos, about a 75min ferry ride away. Although it covers around 43 square kilometers, the island is home to fewer than 300 residents, making it one of the least populated places in Greece.

After a strong earthquake in 1968 destroyed much of the original settlement, the village was rebuilt with modern materials. However, in recent years, the community has focused on restoring traditional architectural styles, blending the past with the present in a simple and appealing way.

Moreover, Agios Efstratios offers stunning beaches that remain untouched by mass tourism. Unlike more developed islands, it does not have organized beach bars or crowded shores. Instead, travelers can enjoy peaceful swimming and sunbathing at beaches like Agios Antonios, Trygari and Lidario

In addition to its scenic coastline, the island boasts a rich cultural and historical background. Named after Saint Eustratius, a 9th-century monk who lived in exile on the island, Agios Efstratios later became a place of exile for political dissidents during the 20th century, especially during the Metaxas regime and the Greek Civil War.

For nature lovers, the island holds even more appeal. As part of the Natura 2000 network, Agios Efstratios supports a variety of protected wildlife and bird species. Its dry landscape, scenic cliffs, and hidden caves create a perfect setting for hiking and birdwatching.

Although tourism infrastructure remains limited, travelers can still find a few family-run tavernas, guesthouses, and mini-markets that provide the essentials. Since options for accommodation and dining are few, visitors should plan ahead, especially during the summer months. Ferries connect the island to Lemnos and occasionally to other northern Aegean destinations, but schedules may vary by season.
